Virus aetiology of certain cases of lacrimal obstruction.

چکیده

The aetiology of most cases of lacrimation due to stenosis or obstruction of the upper lacrimal drainage system is not yet known, but in some cases it is due to infection of the lacrimal puncta and canaliculi when virus disease is localized in the eyes and eyelids. Attention has already been drawn to constriction and obstruction of the lacrimal puncta and canaliculi in ophthalmic vaccinia (Bouzas, i960, I962). Similar complications have been observed in herpes zoster ophthalmicus (Bouzas, I 964, 1965), in herpes simplex of the eye, and in the Lyell syndrome (Bouzas and Drossos, 197I). A systematic follow-up has been undertaken of ophthalmic involvement in various virus diseases in patients treated in Athens at the Infectious Diseases Hospital.

Evaluation of lacrimal drainage system by radionuclide dacryoscintigraphy in patients with epiphora

Introduction: This study was done to determine the site of obstruction in lacrimal drainage system in Asian patients suffering from epiphora and to determine the transit time taken for the tracer material to reach the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity. Methods:Dacryoscintigraphy was performed using radionuclide technetium-99m pertechnetate (99m...

Lacrimal Obstruction

While less common than distal lacrimal obstruction, proximal obstruction causes many cases of epiphora. This article examines the aetiology of proximal lacrimal obstruction and considers current management strategies with reference to recent literature. The Lester Jones tube is the favoured method of dealing with most cases of severe proximal obstruction; other methods have been tried with less...

Lacrimal canalicular obstruction following chickenpox.

Three cases of unilateral epiphora following an attack of chickenpox were studied. Each patient was a child who was in good health prior to the onset of the attack. During the illness each had ocular symptoms suggesting local infection from the virus. A dacryocystogram revealed obstruction of the common canaliculus in each case caused by a fibrotic scar. All cases responded to appropriate surgi...
